When Duchamp came along and decided that art was the idea itself, people lost their shit.
He took a urinal, placed it on a pedestal and called it “The fountain”.
Art critics were split and most audience members understandably had a melt down.
But for me, this train of thought is just another form of creative sampling. Except rather than canvas to canvas, he took an object from another domain (plumbing) displaced it from its original intention and gave it a new meaning. (Sculpture)
To have the balls to elevate a device used to process excrements to a vessel for emotional provocation blows my mind.
It’s intellectual punk.
I don’t dig the piece, but I do dig his attitude and I think it’s worth stealing.
Let’s get creative with sampling.
